Gautier to Dauphin Island
49.1 miles 381 feet of climb
We left Shephard State Park near Gautier MS and went by Pascagoula, where we had a glimpse of the Gulf. Then we were in Alabama.
Boom. Another state. After spending a short time in Mississippi, we are spending all of one night camping in an RV park on Dauphin Island AL. Tomorrow we will be taking the ferry over to Pensacola Florida.
Alabama is our seventh state and Florida will be the eighth and final state on this epic ride across the southern part of the USA.
Dauphin Island sits between Mobile Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. I can hear the waves hit the shore from our campsite. Getting here meant Going from Gautier past Pascagoula and then on into Alabama.
We stopped for lunch in Bayou La Batre at the Catalina Bayou Restaurant. James, Kathy and I all had first rate food. The seafood was caught yesterday. It doesn't get fresher than that unless you catch it yourself and process it.
After lunch we had to go over the Dauphin Island Bridge. It is three miles in length and awfully high. The grade is rather steep and I actually had to drop down to first gear in order to climb to the top. I hadn't used my lowest gear since we were in West Texas. Here's a video from the top of the bridge
It is supposed to rain tonight and we are planning on taking the 8 am ferry tomorrow. Nothing is ever easy on this trip.
I crossed that same bridge and ended on Dauphin Island on my North/South trip many many years ago. Awesome views! Enjoy the rest of the journey!
