Today was a rest day and so we took the van and headed to New Orleans, always driven by one of the two leaders. Even though we were in Mississippi, New Orleans was little over an hour away. (Don't miss the dancing videos at the end of this post.)
Here is the day's beautiful sunrise, Snowflake Donuts and Tacos, in the van headed to New Orleans and Tom and I in our Fred's t-shirts, ready to party!
Three of us walked over to a Snowflake Donuts and Tacos. Taco donuts perhaps? Had a small breakfast taco and coffee just to start the day. We arrived in New Orleans mid-morning and four of us went to Mother's, that Mark said was a small, local joint with great food. On the way, he pointed out two buildings his construction company built (which is why he knew about this place). Mother's Restaurant was not quite the hole in the wall that Mark remembered. In 2020 they expanded into the storefront next door. Nevertheless, the food was great and I love supporting small local places, especially ones with character. I had cheesy grits and a dirty biscuit. It seems that "dirty biscuit" can mean quite a few things, some of them not so nice. It can mean the end of the biscuit dough, making the biscuit mis-shappen or it might have a bit of hot sauce in it. Willie P Richardson even wrote a song called Dirty Biscuit.
James, Mark and I then went to the World War II museum and it too was worth our time.
After eating lunch at Mother's, Mark and I went off to the French Quarter in search of music. You can find music everywhere, even spilling out out into the sidewalk. Mark and I spent some time at a dive bar off of Bourbon Street.
We found music at Jackson Square and also several other members of our group. Here's a video of a misoc we found on Jackson Square.
You can't listen to this music without dancing a bit. Here is an epic video of me and Sharon "dancing."
Now here's a video of what dancing should look like! This is Kathy, one of our leaders.
Overall, it was a great rest day and it set us up nicely for our 80.6 mile ride to Gautier State Park near Biloxie on the Gulf Coast. It will be our second and last night in Mississippi, then one night in Alabama, and on to the Florida panhandle. The end is in sight.
