We have always had "nice" camping gear but as I planned for this journey, it was clear that I would be in a better position with newer, lighter weight, more compact equipment. For a tent, I settled on the Big Agnes Cooper Spur hv ul2 backpacking tent for 2. It has proven to be a great choice. It weighs 3 lbs 8 oz. The poles are shock-corded but are only 12 inches in length so they can easily fit between bicycle handlebars. I don't have to carry my gear so my tent just goes in my duffle bag but it makes the tent really small. This is a photo of my tent with my microfiber towel drying on the top. Note the green, astro turf welcome mat! It actually helps keep things a bit cleaner.
Here's a video of how I live in the tent.
Shoes are also an important piece of gear. I am actually using mountain bike shoes. The clips that clip to my pedals are recessed so I can easily walk in them without scraping floors and they also flex just a bit in the toe, also making it easier to walk.
This picture was taken in Austin - they are a bit dirty but are holding up well. Note the red cording is dialed in (tightened) by the "button" on the side. As you turn the button, it tightens or loosens the red cords, allowing for a precision closure. It makes a ratcheting sound as the button is turned. It works very well and my shoes are always perfectly tightened which makes for a good start to a day.
